Why Does an SEO Company Need FTP?

What Is FTP and how does it work?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a method for transmitting files over the Internet, between computers. It can be used in many different contexts, such as sending a file from one computer to another or moving an entire website from one host server to another.

FTP is often associated with uploading files to a website. This is referred to as uploading or downloading a website, depending on whether the files are uploaded from the webmaster to the server or from the server to the webmaster.

Here are some key benefits of using FTP:

  • Flexible – FTP gives you the flexibility to download or upload large files (such as digital photos, documents, videos) as often as you need.
  • Reliable – Files transferred using FTP are stored online in a secure environment.

Why does an SEO company need FTP access?

Let me just start by saying it’s completely normal to be cautious about giving FTP access to your website. And yes, they would have the power to completely ruin your website or do nefarious things.

An SEO company might need FTP access so they can edit and make changes to your website. Depending on your website setup and whether or not it’s using a content management system (CMS), the SEO company will need to make changes to content, images, page layout, page structure, navigation, and many other parts of a website.

As someone who offers SEO services, it’s common for me to ask for FTP access – especially if there are problems but sometimes just in case. In many circumstances, problems can arise with coding and we’ll need FTP to be able to fix the code directly instead of in a roundabout way.

If you’re worried about giving FTP access, here’s what I would suggest you do before you hand it over:

  • Make a backup of your website. Your hosting should provide this. If you’re on WordPress, you can use a plugin like Updraft.
  • Make sure you trust the company.
  • Make sure the company keeps login credentials safe
  • I know I already said this but take a backup of your website.
  • And then back it up again but save the backup somewhere else.

How do I Get FTP credentials?

FTP accounts use a standard username and password combination plus a server IP or URL address.

While FTP is a standard, the implementation of FTP varies widely. While most people will use a standard FTP client such as Filezilla, a business might have a custom application that uses the service.

In most cases, and this is for non-tech people, you’ll be able to create or find your credentials in your cPanel. If you are not using cPanel or have no idea what that is, it’s probably best to seek guidance from an IT person. However, most web hosting services will include FTP access.

I've been making websites since I was a kid and now have over 20 years of experience building them for myself and my agency. I noticed patterns of problems that all business owners experience with their websites. Problems that most business owners don’t even know matter, let alone how to address. I built Pagemend to help people stay on top of their websites.
